THE CLASICOS: CHIVAS VS. AMERICA EDITION

Tomorrow... well actually in a few hours, one of the greatest rivalries in soccer (futbol) will take place, of course I am talking about the Superclasico Chivas vs. America!!!

This should be a pretty interesting one, putting aside the rivalry factor there is a lot at stake. For instance, Chivas could potentially regain the Superliderato since both Santos de Laguna and Cruz Azul were defeated this jornada. The Superliderato is up for grabs! A victory for Guadalajara would mean the Superliderato and since regular season is a few games from being over, the Superliderato is of great worth (putting aside the whole curse of the Superliderato).

Las Aguilas on the other-hand are just playing for sheer pride since their nightmare season is almost over. America is currently in 16th place with 14 points. Apertura 2011 was definitely not their season! Although they are coming off a surprising 3-0 win over Monterrey.

I guess it's up in the air, since there are no safe bets in soccer but my chedda is still on Chivas!

Btw another clasico being battled today is Manchester United vs. Manchester City! The Manchester clasico is literally less then 5 hours away!

Soccer Sunday will be pretty epic, so tune in!!!

"Been gone for a minute know I'm back at the jump off"

So.... I took a bit of time off but now I'm back, and what a day to come back with so much international action! The UEFA national teams are battling it out for a spot in the EURO 2012 Championship. While the CONMEBOL teams are fighting for a spot in the World Cup. The smaller CONCACAF teams are also dueling it out for a spot in the World Cup. While the big 2 from CONCACAF (Mexico and U.S.) are both participating in some international friendlies. The most interesting game in my opinion will be Mexico vs. Brazil @ 6 PM PT.

Where Will Gio Play??????????

Giovani Dos Santos' future is up in the air. With the transfer window deadline being today, it seems like time has run out for the Mexican player. Both Sevilla and Udinese have expressed great interest in the player but nothing has materialized with either club team. It seems that neither team is willing to shell out the 9 million Euros asking price. The clock is rapidly ticking away, and with each passing second Gio is closer to being stuck at Tottenham for another 6 months. The Spurs are a great team but unfortunately for Gio he is on Harry Redknapp's shit list which translates into no playing time!

The U-20 World Cup Finalist are...

Portugal vs. Brazil
In 2 very dramatic semifinals Portugal and Brazil defeated their rivals by 2 goals. Portugal still hasn't had any goals scored against them in 6 games.

Mexico and Brazil looked pretty even throughout the game but in a span of 5 minutes Henrique scored 2 goals for Brazil. Mexico will play against France for third place.

The first U-20 World Cup finalist is...

Portugal
Coming up next is Mexico vs. Brazil, for live commentary follow me on Twitter: @soccersavvy.

Barcelona wins the Supercup!!!!

Barcelona have won their 10th Supercup! They defeated Real Madrid 3-2 at Camp Nou, with an aggregate score of 5-4. They tied on Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu 2-2. Messi scored 3 goals, Villa scored 1, Iniesta scored 1 (for Barcelona) and Ozil scored 1, Xavi Alonso scored 1, Cristiano scored 1, Benzema scored 1 (for Real Madrid).

The hatred between the two teams was palpable, it all culminated into a massive fight in the 93rd minute. Marcelo received a red card for a hard tackle on Cesc Fabregas. Fabregas made his long awaited return to Barcelona towards the end of the game. The fight between the two teams ended with Ozil and Villa receiving red cards. Both players had been subbed out earlier and were on the bench. The 3 players that received red cards will miss the first game of the season, whenever La Liga begins. The Spanish players are currently on strike and will not play their scheduled games this weekend.

The 4 U-20 World Cup Semifinalists are...

Barcelona is Real Madrid's Kryptonite

Once again, Barcelona proved that they are Real Madrid's kryptonite. Real Madrid was the favorite to win the first leg of the Spanish Supercup. Not only did they have home field advantage (the game was at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid) but they were also much more prepared, having a very productive pre-season.Yet when push came to shove, and there were lots of pushes and shoves, Real Madrid could not pull off the win. The game ended in a draw (2-2) despite the fact that Real Madrid played a better game.

Real Madrid had possession of the ball for most of the game and created more goal scoring opportunities. They also played with their starting lineup while injuries prevented the Catalan team from doing so; both Pique and Xavi came in as subs in the second half.

The goal scorers were: Mezut Ozil 13', David Villa 36', Lionel Messi 45', and Xabi Alonso 54'.The best goal of the night was definitely David Villa's, it was similar to Gio Dos Santos' goal in the Gold Cup final. His shot curved beautifully into the corner of the net making it impossible for Iker Casillas to reach it. Although Messi made it onto the score sheet, he was practically invisible for most of the game. Cristiano Ronaldo made his presence noticeable but could not get the ball past Victor Valdes.

All and all it was a good game. Should Madrid have won? Yes without a doubt. Are they going to need a miracle to win at Camp Nou? Yes, without a doubt!

Memo Ochoa: Life in France

The Mexican goalkeeper is said to be adjusting to life in  France pretty well. He has even began to learn the language. He has not had a picture perfect debut with his new team, AC Ajaccio, but he is looking forward to improving and getting more comfortable with the European style of play. If last Wednesday's international game (Mexico vs. USA) was an indicator of what's to come from Memo then I foresee a lot of success for this curly haired gk.

Mexico vs. USA: the Bitter Taste of a Draw 1-1

Summary:
It was definitely a tale of two half's. Mexico played a great first half while the US played a better second half. Each team scored a goal in their better half. Oribe Peralta scored the goal for Mexico while Robbie Rogers scored the goal for the American team. Brek Shea (who was subbed in the second half) made a huge difference for the Yanks, he solidified his place on the team. The villain of the game was definitely Gerardo Torrado who pulled down Robbie Rogers as he was about to score his second goal of the night. In the end it was a great game and it was a good debut for Jurgen Klinsmann.

My Opinion:
Both teams played pretty evenly. Mexico had many opportunities to score in the first half while the clock was the only thing that prevented the US from scoring in the second half.

Torrado is being villainised for what he pulled on Rogers but honestly it was pretty smart. He saved his team from losing because Rogers was surely going to score. I remember during the past World Cup when Uruguay's Luis Suarez stopped Ghana's goal with his hand he was considered heroic. We was a hero because his handball prevented his team from losing. Well Torrado saved his team too, was it polite and legal? No. Did it work? Yes.

The player of the night, was definitely Memo Ochoa who made various impossible saves for El Tri.

All in all, it was a success for the Yanks. Mexico is an established team and this should have been and easy victory for them but they struggled to maintain the draw.  The Yanks are under-construction and still have a lot of kinks to work out. If this is a reflection of what's to come for the Yanks, then I for see a lot of greatness for Klinsmann's team.

Mexico vs. USA HALF-TIME Report

Mexico is up by 1 with a really strange goal that was scored by Oribe Peralta.

Mexico vs. USA: The Rivalry Explained

Friendly? Yeah, right! One of the most important matches in today’s international fixture date is the Mexico vs. US game. This “friendly” will be anything but friendly, it will be more like an epic battle between the two North American giants. Expect shoving, fighting, and intense soccer.  They’re not playing for a trophy or a spot in the World Cup; they are playing for pride.

So why so much beef? You ask. Well, as of recent the American side has been considered the better team in the CONCACAF region (I’m talking about the last decade, not this past Gold Cup).  Historically soccer is the only sport which Mexicans have dominated over Americans. El Tri was used to being the only noteworthy team in the region; sharing the spotlight with the American side is not something they have assimilated to. I’m not saying that the ill will is one sided, because the Yanks dislike the Mexican team just as much as the Mexicans dislike the Yanks. The American team, in trying to make a name for themselves, have further fueled the rivalry.

Enmity between these two teams has culminated into many violent confrontations on the pitch. Who can forget Rafa Marquez’ two infamous red cards against the Yanks, one for a head butt to Cobi Jones in the 2002 and the other for a flying kick to Tim Howard in 2009. What about the Landon Donavan “watering the grass” incident over at Estadio Jalisco. Or Gerardo Torrado choking out Benny Feilhaber after a fight broke out between the two teams at Estadio Azteca, and most recently Jermaine Jones trying to provoke Javier Hernandez at the Gold Cup final. When asked about the rivalry players from both teams are very candid and express their dislike of one another. There is definitely a lack of mutual respect.

The rivalry is something that both players and supporters revel in. When a game is played with an overwhelming Mexican home team advantage the American national anthem cannot be heard over the booing. There has been a mutual burning of flags from both team’s supporters. The crowds throw objects at each other and at the players. A multitude of police officers are always essential.

Putting aside the tasteless antics between both teams and supporters the rivalry is a driving force for better soccer to be played. The Yanks and El Tri know that there is a lot at stake each time they play one another. Whether it’s a World Cup qualifier, a Gold cup final, or an international friendly; regional dominance is always at stake. Both teams play with pride and will do anything to win. The added incentive of not only beating but humiliating your rival makes for a superior level of play. Both the Yanks and El Tri want to be best team in the CONCACAF region. The CONCACAF region is often overlooked by the rest of the soccer world, so being the greatest team in the CONCACAF region is kind of like being the only team in the region.

Overall Mexico is still in the lead with a record of 33-15-11. Mexico has also won the last three face-offs which included a 2-1 World Cup qualifier at Azteca and a 4-2 Gold Cup final at the Rose Bowl. The Yanks were ranked higher in the FIFA World Rankings for a long time but after this past Gold Cup Mexico became the highest ranked CONCACAF team. Both teams are good teams; fortunately and unfortunately the rivalry will live on forever.

Don’t miss another episode of this intense rivalry, tune in today on ESPN2 or Univision at 9PM ET. Mexico will attempt to solidify their place as the better team and the USMNT will seek revenge.

Jumping Right In...

To borrow from a very funny movie, "There are two ways to get into the water. First you take your toe and you gently test the water’s temperature, and if that feels okay, then you slowly get in, letting your body adjust to the cold. Then there’s this way- you JUMP!"

I'm definitely a jumper... not in a suicidal way but in a "I'm going to jump right in and get started" kind of way.

I'm a hardcore soccer fanatic and although I grew up in the states (not exactly soccer central) I have always been completely enchanted by this beautiful sport. I love everything about it, from the tactics to the masterful control that the players have over the ball.

Obviously there are teams I love and teams I despise,  players I love and players I despise, I'm going to use this blog to discuss anything and everything soccer related. I love talking/arguing soccer so I hope to be doing that a lot. Soccer is always in season somewhere,  so there is always something new to talk about. There are different leagues and different national teams which equals to endless amounts of conversational topics.

Since I started off this spiel by quoting Mary Catherine Gallagher it would only be fitting to close it off by quoting another insightful human being, Patches O'Houlihan, "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball." Words to live by!
